Floriade Delves Into Nature's Science

Australia's Biggest Celebration of Spring returns for its 38th year, as Floriade 2025 officially opens its gates this weekend in Commonwealth Park.

With the theme Science and Nature, this year's festival invites visitors to explore the wonders of the natural world through a scientific lens — from the tiniest bugs to the farthest stars.

Garden beds inspired by physics, chemistry, astronomy and biology are already transforming the park into a vibrant living laboratory, with hands-on activities, creative installations and plenty of surprises for all ages.

"Floriade's significance goes well beyond its stunning displays and vibrant atmosphere. It's a cornerstone of Canberra's cultural identity and a powerful economic driver," Chief Minister Andrew Barr said.

"It's an event that attracts close to half a million local, national and international visitors to our city each year, and generates a significant boost to local businesses and our economy overall.

"Floriade showcases the best of Canberra, including our creativity, community spirit and liveability.

"It's a great chance for Canberrans to get out and enjoy Spring in the capital with plenty of activities, and a vibrant atmosphere during the festival."

This year, Floriade proudly welcomes Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, Australia's beloved science communicator, who will deliver the keynote talk on Saturday 4 October, followed by meet-and-greet sessions with fans.

The much-loved NightFest returns from 2-5 October, lighting up the park with colour and music. Highlights include First Nations singer-songwriter Pirritu, ARIA award-winning artist Josh Pyke, and Ella Hooper with her dynamic five-piece band. The Kazador Tent will host family-friendly daytime shows during the school holidays, and the adults-only Kiss Tease Cabaret hosted by comedian Peter Berner during NightFest.

Other festival favourites include:

  • Windows to the World at Floriade on Saturday 11 October, showcasing cultural performances, food and traditional dress.
  • Dogs' Day Out on Sunday 12 October.
  • The Great Big Bulb Dig on Monday 13 October, supporting YWCA Canberra, Floriade's 2025 Charity Partner.

Entry to Floriade is free. Gates are open from 9:30am to 5:30pm on 13 September and then daily till 12 October 2025.
