Framed And Focused

Two of the 20th century's most influential photographers feature at Bayside Gallery this winter as Max Dupain and Ansel Adams: In Search of Perfection arrives from 20 June to 30 August.

Bayside Gallery is the only Victorian venue hosting this National Gallery of Australia touring exhibition, giving locals a rare opportunity to experience works by the celebrated Australian (Dupain) and American (Adams) photographers side-by-side.

Internationally recognised for their mastery of black-and-white photography, the exhibition features iconic works exploring the artists' shared pursuit of technical excellence, composition and expressive potential of light.

The program also includes a photography workshop led by local artist and photographer Greg Elms, who met Max Dupain as a student.

"Max Dupain's work, particularly for Australians, is an important window into our recent past," Greg said.

During the workshop, Greg will discuss his own unconventional process using a high-resolution flatbed scanner to create photo-based artworks and invite participants to experiment with the technique themselves.

"Workshops and exhibitions remain an important part of learning photography," Greg said.

"It's one thing to take iPhone photos and quite another to create a considered visual narrative with images, and to find a singular voice in this medium."

Greg is encouraging visitors to take time to 'read a photograph' by observing the composition, lighting, framing and emotional response each image creates.

Max Dupain and Ansel Adams: In search of perfection is a National Gallery Touring Exhibition presented as part of the Bowness Family Foundation Photography Touring Program
