Griffith City Council has been successful in obtaining $95,460 under the NSW Government's Infrastructure Grants Program for the construction of the Borland Leckie inclusive playspace.
The Infrastructure Grants Program supports communities in the building, renovation and fit out of infrastructure. Funding is available for arts and cultural infrastructure, projects that enhance facilities used to shelter communities and provide emergency services and for sport and recreation and essential community infrastructure.
The currently vacant parkland is located in Erskine Road, West Griffith and was identified in Council's Playground Strategy as requiring upgrades.
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran said earlier this year Council sought the opinion of residents and stakeholders through a survey which assisted in obtaining the funding for the $190,000 project which will be co-funded by Griffith City Council.
"Consulting with the community is an essential part of Council operations and this particular funding application was successful in part due to the feedback provided by Griffith residents," said Councillor Curran.
"I am excited that we can now progress this project which will see space transformed into an engaging public space which will have a positive impact on the community, promote an active lifestyle and provide equitable access to quality facilities for those in West Griffith."
The inclusive playspace will include the installation of play equipment, seating and an accessible footpath, creating a meeting place for children, parents and carers where they can interact socially, creating a more connected and engaged community.
"Council recognised the lack of playspaces in the West Griffith locale and with population projections estimating an increase of young children residing in the area, the redevelopment of Borland Leckie Park was a high priority," said Councillor Curran.
"As the project progresses, Council will be consulting with the community to ensure we are providing a playspace which is accessible, caters to a range of ages, abilities and skills, and will have a positive impact on their physical and emotional wellbeing."
