Glencore Rejects Talks at Townsville Copper Refinery

Australian Workers' Union (Qld Branch)

Recently Glencore put a proposed Agreement out to vote for the workers employed at their Copper Refinery in Townsville.

They proceeded with a vote on the Agreement despite knowing their offer didn't have the support of the workforce.

75% of workers rejected the offer.

The last negotiation meeting was held eight weeks ago, and now Glencore have advised they will not be meeting again until some time 'towards the end of May.'

Comments attributable to AWU Northern District Secretary Jim Wilson:

'The Australian Workers' Union was clear at our last meeting – workers won't cop a substandard wage increase in the current environment with the cost of living crisis.

'It comes as no surprise to anyone that workers have overwhelmingly rejected the proposed Agreement.

'Now, instead of getting back to the table to sort it out, Glencore have packed up and said they aren't interested in talking until some time towards the end of May.

'This is disgraceful conduct from a huge multinational company that should know better. Workers are hurting, but instead of doing the right thing and delivering a wage increase that will bring them up to local industry standard, they are stalling and refusing to meet.

'Glencore has been a huge benefactor of the Australian taxpayer, but once again they are demonstrating that the only thing they care about is stripping money out of our economy, refusing to give back to the workers who make their business possible.

'Their behaviour shows how little they care about their workers and the community of Townsville. When it comes to bad corporate citizens, they are the worst there is.

'The AWU is calling on Glencore to get back to the table and sort the Agreement out so workers can get the payrise they deserve.'
