- Conference highlights the role Western Australia will play in the global energy transition
Western Australia's role in the global energy transition has taken centre stage with more than 650 delegates travelling to Perth as part of the 62nd Annual Australia-Japan Joint Business Conference.
Jointly organised by the Australia Japan Business Cooperation Committee (AJBCC) and Japan-Australia Business Co-operation Committee (JABCC), the conference is a flagship annual event in the bilateral relationship, bringing together senior government and industry leaders from both nations to strengthen one of the Indo-Pacific's most enduring partnerships.
The 62nd conference, under the theme of "Navigating New Realities: Turbulence, Transition, Technology", has attracted the largest Japanese delegation to date to an Australian host city.
The three-day program explores the challenges and opportunities arising from increased geopolitical uncertainty, the global energy transition, and the emergence of new technologies such as artificial intelligence.
Delegates can also participate in a curated site visit program to global industry-leading operations and technology hubs in Western Australia.
This includes tours of the Australian Automation and Robotics Precinct, Rio Tinto's Remote Operations Centre and Woodside Energy's Perth facilities.
Australia and Japan have alternated hosting the conference each year since its inception in 1963.
The conference was last held in Perth in 2008.
WA secured hosting rights following a successful joint bid by Invest and Trade Western Australia and Business Events Perth in January 2024.
The event follows Western Australia's activations at World Expo 2025 in Osaka and provides a significant opportunity to highlight the importance of the Western Australia-Japan relationship at both an economic and cultural level.
In 2024-25, Japan was Western Australia's second-largest trading partner, with total trade valued at $28.2 billion.
