Government exposed on land tax hypocrisy

Tasmanian Labor
  • Premier ignores land tax burden
  • Increases of up to forty percent
  • Government says it's a good thing
  • The Premier Peter Gutwein must explain why he has abandoned a commitment made in Opposition to abolish land tax.

Shadow Treasurer David O'Byrne said yet again the Premier had been exposed as a political chameleon who will do and say anything to get elected.

"Premier Gutwein has broken his promise to mum and dad shack owners who face having to sell up because they can no longer afford to pay extortionate rates of land tax on their family shack.

"The bill shock is simply unaffordable for some shack owners who've been hit with land tax bills that have doubled, tripled and even quadrupled.

"Peter Gutwein has previously described land tax as unfair and regressive because, he said, it stifles investment, costs jobs and ends up being passed on to retirees, renters and businesses in the form of higher costs.

"When it suited his political purposes Peter Gutwein promised to abolish this tax.

"Now I wonder if, to use his own words, Premier Gutwein accepts that by maintaining land tax his Government is costing jobs, damaging investment and sending businesses broke?"

    David O'Byrne MP

    Shadow Treasurer
