  • Perth Short Stay to be WA's fifth dedicated Aboriginal short-stay accommodation

The Cook Labor Government has released a restricted Request for Tender (RFT) seeking an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation or Registered Aboriginal Business to operate the Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation service.

The Perth Short Stay will provide affordable, culturally safe, and welcoming accommodation for Aboriginal people visiting Perth, creating a supportive environment where guests can maintain connections to family, community, health care, education, employment, and other essential services.

The successful provider will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive service, including guest intake and accommodation management, culturally responsive support, assistance accessing and navigating services, meal provision, and housekeeping.

Located in Cannington, the Perth Short Stay will accommodate up to 100 guests once built and represents a significant investment in improving outcomes for Aboriginal visitors to the metropolitan area.

Construction began in August 2025 and two Noongar artists were announced to create art for the facility in April 2026.

The Perth Short Stay is expected to welcome its first guests in 2027 and will become part of Western Australia's established network of Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation services in Kalgoorlie, Derby, Broome, and Geraldton.

Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation is a joint initiative between the Department of Housing and Works, which handles construction, and the Department of Communities, which looks after service delivery.

The RFT for the operation of the Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation can be found at theTenders WA website and will close in four weeks.

As stated by Homelessness and Community Services Minister Matthew Swinbourn:

"The Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation represents another initiative in the Cook Labor Government's toolkit to reduce rough sleeping and overcrowded housing in our communities.

"Aboriginal people and families visiting Perth deserve access to affordable, culturally safe accommodation, and this facility will provide exactly that.

"This Request for Tender brings the Perth Short Stay one step closer to delivery, and I encourage all interested Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and Registered Aboriginal Businesses to apply."

As stated by Aboriginal Affairs Minister Don Punch:

"Aboriginal organisations understand their communities and are best placed to deliver services that are culturally responsive and grounded in the needs of Aboriginal people.

"Having an Aboriginal organisation operate the Perth Short Stay will help ensure people staying at the facility feel culturally safe, supported, and connected while they are away from home."
