Grant to kick-start new LGBTIQ+ community alliance

Minister for Communities and Housing, Minister for Digital Economy and Minister for the Arts The Honourable Leeanne Enoch

Organisations who work with and represent Queensland's LGBTIQ+ community are being encouraged to submit an application for a grant to start-up a new LGBTIQ+ community alliance.

Minister for Communities and Housing Leeanne Enoch said the $200,000 Palaszczuk Government grant would support the establishment of a new alliance to support LGBTIQ+ Queenslanders and communities.

"The Alliance will provide a key platform for Queenslanders of diverse gender and sexual identities to have a stronger voice, particularly those living in rural, regional and remote parts of the state," Ms Enoch said.

"The Palaszczuk Government has a strong record of engaging with and supporting the LGBTIQ+ community, and the successful applicant will undertake deep engagement with community members and their families.

"The Alliance is a way for us to strengthen the engagement and participation of the community with our government and in our communities."

In addition to the establishment of the community alliance, the Palaszczuk Government is also strengthening its successful LGBTIQ+ Roundtable, with applications for membership now open.

The LGBTIQ+ community alliance will participate in the Roundtable, which works with the Queensland Government to inform policy, programs, services and strategies that are inclusive of, and respond to, the needs of LGBTIQ+ Queenslanders.

Applications for the LGBTIQ+ alliance start-up grant are now open at https://communities.smartygrants.com.au/LGBTIQA2022.

Ms Enoch said the Palaszczuk Government had a proud history of embracing the LGBTIQ+ community and improving their rights in the state.

"This includes equalising the age of consent, abolishing the gay panic defence, legalising adoption for same-sex couples, and expunging consensual homosexual sex convictions," she said.

"Since our election in 2015, we've been working hard to ensure that LGBTIQ+ Queenslanders are treated fairly and equally.

"We believe all Queenslanders, regardless of their sexuality or gender identity, should be able to participate and be included in their communities and enjoy social and economic wellbeing."
