The Halls Creek community celebrated the official opening of its upgraded oval, marking a major milestone for local sport and the return of football to the venue.
The upgraded Halls Creek Oval was officially opened at a community event on Friday 19 June, before Round 1 of the South East Kimberley Football League season kicked off at the venue on Saturday June 20.
The Cook Labor Government invested nearly $1.45 million to help get the long-awaited project back on track and support the delivery of new turf and irrigation upgrades.
A further $285,000 was provided through the Club Night Lights Program to support new oval floodlighting, improving access and creating more opportunities for local sport and community use.
Friday's community open day included an official welcome, smoking ceremony, free barbecue and Dockers Shield games, giving residents the chance to experience the upgraded facility and celebrate its completion.
The following day, competitive football returned to Halls Creek Oval for Round 1 of the SEKFL season, marking the start of a new chapter for community sport in the region.
Saturday June 20 fixtures included:
- 1pm: Yardgee Dockers v Halls Creek Hawks
- 3pm: Mulan Saints v Yiyili Powers
- 5pm: Kundat Djaru Cats v Kurrunguku Roos
The upgraded oval will provide an important gathering place for Halls Creek, supporting local football, recreation and community events for years to come.
The project forms part of the Cook Labor Government's PlayOn WA: 2030 by 2030 initiative, which is driving investment in quality community sport and recreation infrastructure across Western Australia.
