Health Minister Speaks on Int'l Clinical Trials Day

CA Gov

Clinical trials are essential to delivering the next generation of treatments and improving lives. They give Canadians access to cutting-edge therapies while strengthening our health system and economy.

Canada ranks third worldwide, representing four percent of global activity. We are building on this strong foundation to attract even more investment and innovation for clinical trials across the country.

Canada is taking action to modernize how clinical trials are conducted across the country to reduce barriers to innovation and to support faster access to new treatments and technologies. The new framework will further facilitate patient access to clinical trials and increase international alignment. We are also developing a pilot program focused on pediatric clinical trials to ensure children benefit from safe, effective treatments tailored to their needs.

Since 2020, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has invested $1.1 billion to strengthen Canada's clinical trials ecosystem, supporting world-class research in our universities and hospitals. From improving treatments for children to advancing cancer care and rare disease research, clinical trials help shape better health outcomes for people in Canada and around the world.

On International Clinical Trials Day, we acknowledge the invaluable contributions of researchers, clinicians, and participants who make clinical trials, innovation and new treatments possible across the country. Together, we will continue to strengthen Canada's clinical trials landscape and improve the health and well-being of Canadians.
