High Speed Intercept, Teebar

Police from Wide Bay Highway Patrol are reminding all motorists to slow down, remember the Fatal Five and drive to the conditions this National Road Safety Week.

There have been 15 lives lost on roads across the district so far this year, an increase of two compared to the same period last year.

Around 2pm on 13 May, a green P plate driver overtook an unmarked police vehicle on Brooweena-Woolooga Rd in Teebar while travelling 155 kilometres an hour in the 100 zone.

A 19-year-old Torbanlea man was fined $1919 and eight demerit points, and had his licence suspended for six months.

Officer in Charge of Maryborough Highway Patrol Josh Churchward said this type of dangerous behaviour won't be tolerated and Queenslanders can expect police anywhere, anytime.

"Enforcement alone will not drive down the road toll - road safety is everyone's responsibility," he said.

This National Road Safety Week, police are asking communities to come together, make a pledge and ensure the roads are safe for everyone.

Sergeant Churchward said speeding, drink and drug driving, driving distracted, not wearing a seatbelt and fatigue feature far too often in serious and fatal crashes.

"Every decision behind the wheel matters to ensure all road users can make it safely to their destination."

The Queensland Police Service is committed to reducing the number of lives lost on our roads.

As part of Operation Interpose, police are bolstering high-visibility patrols right across the state, engaging with road users and enforcing the laws to deter dangerous driving behaviours.

Queenslanders can expect police – anywhere, anytime. However, enforcement alone cannot stop all dangerous driving behaviours.

Driving under the influence, speeding, driving distracted or while fatigued, or not wearing a seatbelt puts your life – and the lives of others – at serious risk. These dangerous behaviours will not be tolerated.

Road safety starts with you.
