One-way traffic will be introduced to Hindley St as part of a $50 million project being jointly delivered by the State Government and the City of Adelaide.
Under the plan, traffic will travel east to west, creating a safer and more welcoming destination that supports local businesses, residents and visitors while strengthening the connection between the precinct's thriving daytime and nighttime economies.
The revitalisation of Hindley St's eastern end forms part of the City of Adelaide's Main Street Revitalisation program and builds on the successful redevelopment of the street's western end in 2013.
Concept designs were developed following extensive consultation with the community, including local business owners and hotel operators.
Feedback highlighted the importance of pedestrian safety and crowd management, helping shape the latest designs.
Key features of the proposed upgrade include:
- wider footpaths to improve pedestrian movement
- new pedestrian crossings
- enhanced street lighting and expanded CCTV coverage
- additional street trees for shade and amenity
- raised garden beds and new landscaping
- modern street furniture
- greater capacity for outdoor dining.
The upgrade comes as Adelaide continues to attract larger crowds for major events and festivals, increasing demand for high-quality public spaces in the CBD.
The project is expected to encourage greater visitation, support economic activity and strengthen the street's reputation as one of the city's premier entertainment destinations.
Community members and stakeholders will have an opportunity to review the plans and provide feedback ahead of construction, which is expected to begin in 2028.
