The year might be coming to a close, but Hobart still has a huge calendar of events to squeeze in before 2024 arrives, with Taste of Summer, HayDays and Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, all kicking off after Christmas, and New Year's Eve on the waterfront set to be better than ever.
Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the city would be buzzing on New Year's Eve with people attending the Taste of Summer Hobart Community Day, which offers free entry until 4pm sponsored by the City of Hobart, and then coming in to watch the firework displays in the evening.
"This year marks 25 years since the City of Hobart's first New Year's Eve river fireworks display which began in 1988, and we have invested $127,000 to ensure a spectacular show as always," Cr Reynolds said.
"The fireworks will be set off from two barges on the River Derwent and the waterfront is a perfect place to watch.
"With all the people expected to pour into the city, we have made some upgrades from last year to ensure the waterfront is family friendly, accessible and fun for everyone.
"For the first time we will be closing the roads around the waterfront to vehicles and making it a bigger, safer pedestrian zone.
"We have also increased the number of services and amenities in the area such as public toilets, bins, security and safety angels.
"There will be more seating available to watch the firework displays which each last around 9 minutes each at Parliament lawns and Franklin Wharf as well as an accessible viewing area beside Brooke Street Pier.
"If you are coming into the waterfront on New Year's Eve, please make sure you plan your night ahead and check the City of Hobart website for transport and parking options.

"From newcomer HayDays to calendar highlights, Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and Taste of Summer, the City of Hobart is committed to supporting events that activate our city.
"Hobart really shines when our waterfront is alive with people and entertainment," Cr Kelly said.
"We are thrilled to once again be sponsoring the Taste of Summer Hobart Community Day to provide free entry for everyone on New Year's Eve up until 4pm.
"All stalls will be open and it's a great chance to explore a huge range of sweet and savoury food from some of our very clever local producers and artisans.
"There will be lots of entertainment with live music and performances as well as activities for the kids across the site.
"We encourage everyone to get out and experience all that Hobart has to offer."

For people getting a lift with friends, family or a rideshare service, there will be designated drop-off/pick-up area on Elizabeth Street (between Morrison and Davey Street).
Parking
The Regatta Grounds will once again be open for free parking from 26 to 31 December.
We have also extended the opening hours for the Argyle Street and Salamanca Car Parks on New Year's Eve.
Taxis
The taxi rank has moved from Morrison Street and will now be on Salamanca Place beside the Parliament Lawns.
There will be public toilets and late-night food trucks nearby.
Nightrider buses
Metro buses will operate additional MAIB Nightrider buses.
