Honorary Degrees Awarded to Two Distinguished Women

Baroness Pauline Neville-Jones and Professor Dato' Elizabeth Lee have both been awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws at the July graduation ceremonies.

Former senior diplomat and politician Baroness Neville-Jones is a Conservative member of the House of Lords, sitting on the Science and Technology Committee. She served as Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) from 1993 to 1994, on the National Security Council and became Minister of State for Security and Counter Terrorism at the Home Office from 2010 to 2011.

She began her career with the Diplomatic Service serving, among other places, in Washington and the European Commission. She negotiated parts of the German Unification agreements and led the British delegation to the Dayton negotiations on the Bosnia peace settlement.

She subsequently prepared the technology company, QinetiQ, for IPO.

A former BBC Governor, she is a Dame Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George, a Privy Councillor and a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur.

Professor Dato' Elizabeth Lee Doctor of Laws LLD

Professor Dato' Elizabeth Lee is the Group CEO of Sunway Education Group, owned and governed by the not-for-profit Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.

A Malaysian education industry veteran, Elizabeth has been at the forefront of education innovation, leading SEG to achieve many firsts, including the setting up of the first international branch campus in Malaysia with Lancaster University and the championing of dual degrees. Under her leadership since 1992, SEG has grown from just one institution into a dynamic group of over twenty.

Beyond her role with SEG, Elizabeth is a thought-leader in the field of private higher education provision and her role in policy-direction has been recognised by the Malaysian government. She has served on the board of advisors of the National Higher Education Research Institute (IPPTN), a think tank under the auspices of the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia. She is a former member of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) Council.

She holds a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Education from the University of Cambridge as well as many awards and accolades.

For her lifelong dedication and commitment in the field of education, she was bestowed the state title of Dato' by His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Shah, the Sultan of Perak in 2022.
