Illegal E-bikes Seized At Bundaberg

Bundaberg Police are reminding residents to ensure their e-mobility devices are legal, after seizing two illegal e-bikes in Bundaberg.

Around 6.50pm on 24 April, police observed two men riding e-bikes on Bargara Road before they were intercepted.

Following further enquiries, officers determined the bikes were not pedal assisted and could reach top speeds of up to 90km per hour, classifying them as motorbikes not e-bikes.

A 21-year-old Bundaberg South man and a 23-year-old Bundaberg East man were charged with driving an unregistered motorbike, driving an uninsured motorbike and driving a motorbike without a licence.

They are both due to face Bundaberg Magistrates Court on 5 June. The bikes were also seized for 90 days.

To be legal to ride in public places, an e-bike must:

• have a motor with a maximum continuous power output of 250 watts

• be primarily pedal powered with, motor assistance up to a maximum 25 km/h

• be pedalled to activate motor assistance - it cannot be powered by throttle power beyond 6km/h
