Incentives are now available to construct drains and reuse systems on farms in the Torrumbarry and Loddon Valley Irrigation Areas.

Agriculture Victoria is inviting irrigators to express their interest in applying for funding under the Sustainable Irrigation Program.

"The project aims to increase water use efficiency on irrigated farms and reduce the offsite impacts of drainage across the region," Irrigation Extension Officer Kathy Long said.

"Innovative designs including projects that enhance and protect environmental features such as wetlands and remnant vegetation will be encouraged.

"Construction of drains and reuse systems is a key component of best practice irrigation management for surface irrigation systems to improve farm water use efficiency.

"The project aims to keep irrigation drainage on farm and available for productive use and reduce the off-site impacts of water and nutrient runoff."

Funding is targeted at farms in areas without access to formal off-site drainage or areas that currently drain to a terminal wetland or site of high conservation significance.
