- International Volunteer Day is celebrated worldwide on 5 December to recognise and thank volunteers
Community groups, not-for-profit organisations and local governments can apply for grant funding to support local events and activities to help celebrate Western Australia's volunteers as part of International Volunteer Day.
Grants of up to $1,000 are available to support local events that celebrate and strengthen volunteering across Western Australian communities.
Funding is available for a wide range of activities, such as awards, ceremonies, workshops, seminars, and initiatives that promote inclusion and accessibility in volunteering.
Organisations are encouraged to develop creative and meaningful events that highlight the impact of volunteers and inspire others to get involved.
In 2025, the Cook Labor Government awarded $70,000 across 74 organisations throughout WA, supporting a diverse range of volunteer activities, from Walpole to Carnarvon and up to Kununurra.
Some of the events and activities included:
- a community barbeque run by the Cunderdin Community Resource Centre;
- a volunteer sundowner for St Pat's volunteers in Fremantle;
- an appreciation event by Umbrella Multicultural Community Care Services to celebrate volunteers from culturally and linguistically diverse and LGBTIQA+ communities; and
- a community lunch and team building day hosted by the Chung Wah Association.
Applications for the International Volunteer Day Grants program open today and close on Tuesday, 2 June 2026.

As stated by Volunteering Minister Hannah Beazley:
"The International Volunteer Day Grants celebrate the amazing work done by our local heroes who make a difference in our communities each and every day.
"By supporting volunteer recognition events across Western Australia, we are investing in stronger, safer, and more inclusive communities, where every contribution is valued and acknowledged.
"I want to thank all our amazing volunteers for the work they do, and I look forward to officially recognising their service on International Volunteer Day."
