Kempton firearms incident update

An incident in which a 27 year old man received non-life threatening injuries to his foot near Kempton about 5.30am today was consistent with it being an accidental firearm discharge, a preliminary police investigation has found.

"The injured man was driven from a Northern Midlands property to Kempton Mood Food by another man in order to meet with emergency services," Detective Inspector Troy Morrisby said.

Police including Glenorchy CIB investigated the incident, including obtaining forensic evidence and interviewing a 21 year old man who was later released without charge.

"At this point in time, we'll continue our investigation to rule out all other possibilities, however at this stage the evidence is consistent with it being an accidental self-inflicted injury," Detective Inspector Morrisby said.

"At this stage we believe that the incident occurred due to a mishandling of a firearm, which led to an accidental discharge."
