Kingston is encouraging residents to get on their bikes this October as part of Biketober, a fun and friendly national challenge encouraging people of all ages and abilities to ride more.
Whether it's riding to work or school, heading to the shops, meeting up with friends or simply getting out for some exercise, every ride of 10 minutes or more counts towards the challenge.
Kingston Mayor Cr Georgina Oxley said Biketober was a great way to make cycling part of everyday life while having a bit of fun along the way.
"You don't have to be a serious cyclist to take part in Biketober, you just need a bike and a reason to ride," Cr Oxley said.
"Cycling is a great way to keep active, get some fresh air and clear your head, and it can be as simple as swapping a short car trip for a ride.
"It's also a great excuse to get out and explore more of Kingston, whether you're riding on your own, with friends, with your family or as part of a workplace or community group.
"I'd encourage everyone to give it a go this October. Every ride counts, and the most important thing is getting out there and enjoying it."
Kingston will officially launch Biketober with a free community event at Cheltenham Library from 12pm to 1.30pm on Tuesday 22 September.
The event will feature the TEDx Talk The Amazing Way Bicycles Change You, local cycling groups, and a free bicycle tune-up from Brainwaves Bicycles. There will also be e-bike displays from Dyson Bikes and Dutch Cargo, information about Council's work to encourage cycling and improve local infrastructure and light refreshments.
Biketober is free to join, and people can participate as individuals or as part of a workplace, school, group or team.
Love to Ride is giving away some great prizes, including $1,000 cash and a $4,000 holiday.
