Labor's Donation Disclosure Bill to be tabled

Tasmanian Labor
  • Tasmania's donation laws weakest in the country
  • Labor can deliver on donation transparency
  • Commitment needed before next election
  • Labor is determined to fix Tasmania's political donation laws which are the weakest in the country.

Shadow Attorney General Ella Haddad said Labor's Donation Disclosure Bill will be tabled during this week's sitting of Parliament.

"After an extensive period of work and community consultation, this should set us on the path to correcting the state's appalling laws that allow for unlimited political donations to be kept secret from the Tasmanian public," Ms Haddad said.

"Despite this, the Premier Peter Gutwein shows no appetite for donation reform and appears to have backed away from his Government's previous commitment to support the changes.

"The Government has been sitting on a report into community views on donation reform since the end of last year.

"Labor is again calling for this report to be released so the public has a clear picture of why these reforms are needed.

"But this Government seems to be more committed to keeping Tasmanians in the dark.

"Why does Peter Gutwein continue to hold out on donation reform?

"It's obvious it's not in the Liberals' interests to reform these laws because they benefit so much from big donations they intend to keep secret.

"But this is all the more reason for our reforms to be enacted and we call on the Parliament to support Labor's bill."
