Labor supporting jobs and families with outside school hours care extension

Tasmanian Labor
  • More Tasmanian kids to access outside school hours care
  • Labor's Jobs Plan designed to help Tasmanians get back to work and stay in work
  • 10 additional government schools set to benefit
  • A Labor Government would extend outside school hours care in state schools to help parents and families return to the workforce in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, increase their work hours and enrol in training.

Shadow Education and Early Years Minister Josh Willie said now more than ever families need support caring for children so they can access additional work hours and training as the state recovers from the COVID crisis.

"Tasmanian families need additional outside school hours care options and a Labor Government will deliver them," Mr Willie said.

"Every parent understands how difficult it is to juggle work and family responsibilities and it's the role of government - particularly at this time in history - to make what is often a difficult struggle as seamless as possible.

"That's why it's important that under a future Labor Government the availability of before and after school care in will be extended in an additional 10 government schools in Tasmania.

"We will partner with the local community to make sure services are designed to meet the needs of both children and families.

"Funding of $75,000 will be made available to support administration, facility upgrades and equipment at each of the ten schools."

Mr Willie said Labor understood the issues facing parents while in stark contrast, the Liberal Government had not made an effort to help families.

"This is a government that thinks it's okay that we have record waiting lists for Tasmanian families looking for housing and health care and it's no different in providing other essential services like child care.

"The Liberals are happy to tell Tasmanians if you need help getting your work and family balance in check, you are on your own.

"Tasmanian families deserve better but Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff does not understand the need for better and fairer circumstances.

"That's what a Labor Government will do - create a better and fairer society for all Tasmanians."
