From abandoned trolleys and parking issues to pet ownership or choosing where to pitch a tent, Western Downs residents are being asked to participate in the largest ever review of the region's local laws.

Council is updating the region's local laws to keep regulations relevant, fair, and aligned to the modern needs of Western Downs residents, businesses, and visitors.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Corporate Governance and Finance Cr George Moore said the comprehensive review was being undertaken to reduce over-regulation and bring local laws in line with modern community needs, expectations and lifestyles.

"Our local laws set the ground rules for how we live, work, and play, covering everything from animal control and parking to festivals, public spaces, and business activities," Cr Moore said.

"Council's local laws impact everyone living, working, visiting, or conducting business in the Western Downs, and we want the community's input for before decisions are made."

Cr Moore said the community was invited to contribute feedback on 12 key topics across the region's eight current local laws and 22 subordinate laws.

"The current laws and subordinate laws were adopted in 2011 and the way we live, do business, spend our recreational time, and care for our local environment has changed significantly over the past 15 years," he said.

"Our current local laws regulate a diverse range of activities such as animal control and off-leash dog parks, advertising devices, festivals and events, parking and safe use of public areas and facilities for recreational and commercial activities.

"Council's focus is on simplicity; we're aiming to implement a contemporary, community-informed framework of regulations that supports both liveability and business activity, while ensuring public safety and environmental protection.

"By working together, we can develop practical standards that benefit all and reflect the unique character of our region. Don't miss your chance to contribute by having a say online or via our print survey."

Western Downs residents are encouraged to participate in the online survey for the local laws review at wdrc.au/local-laws.

Print copies of the survey can be obtained at any Council library, customer service centre, or visitor information centre. Consultation opens 12 May 2026 and closes 21 July 2026.
