With more than 1,100 people having their say on their vision for Townsville's iconic Rockpool, Townsville's Acting Mayor is encouraging locals and visitors alike to jump online and complete the survey ahead of the community consultation's 5 July 2025 closure.
Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said the Have Your Say survey had gone gangbusters online.
"We're really pleased to see our community get onboard with this consultation, so for those who haven't had their say yet, there is only a week left to do so," Cr Greaney said.
"It's no secret the Rockpool is iconic, but it is aging, it's been a part of our city's history for almost 60 years, however given its location and the fact it utilises sea water, it really is prone to the elements.
"Our community have been telling us what they like about the Rockpool and what they think needs improving, but we know it can be hard to picture what the space could look like, so our team has created some concept artist impressions to help bring new ideas to life, these are in no way final designs — just possibilities to get people thinking.
"Once the survey wraps up, I'm really looking forward to seeing how our community's ideas could shape preliminary designs of what could be instore for the northern end of The Strand."
Councillor Greaney said with the 2032 Olympics fast approaching, it meant Council needed to be knocking on the State Government's door and present a plan that put Townsville's best foot forward.
"This is about creating a community-informed vision. We'll use the feedback to develop early concept designs, and ultimately use that shared vision to attract external funding for delivery," she said.
"Once funded, this will be a project our whole city can be proud of, an amazing community space for everyone.
"We already know we will be hosting the sailing during the 2032 games, where our city will be broadcast to billions across the globe, so we want to make sure people are seeing the best of what we have to offer."
Councillor Greaney said Council's Have Your Say team would be hosting a public consultation on the Strand next week, just in time for the July School holidays.
"School holidays are always a popular time down on the Strand, so we're hoping to engage with more people face to face, some of our younger community members and those who may be utilising the facility," she said.
"The team will be set up down at The Rockpool on Thursday 3 July from 9am – 11am, to capture those who visit The Strand the most."
Council's Rockpool Redevelopment Have Your Say survey will run from Saturday 7 June to Saturday 5 July 2025.
