The impact of international issues such as Brexit, China's military belligerence, political unrest in Hong Kong and the lack of US leadership will be the focus of this week's Shann Memorial Lecture at The University of Western Australia.
UWA graduate and national affairs columnist Jennifer Hewett will deliver this year's lecture, discussing whether these issues are contributing to increasing political dysfunction and unpredictability in the global economy.
After the lecture, there will be a panel discussion and Q&A with Ms Hewett, UWA Foundation Professor of Journalism and Australian Politics Peter van Onselen and former WA Premier Colin Barnett.
The annual Shann Memorial Lecture was introduced to honour the memory of the Foundation Professor of Economics at UWA, Edward Owen Giblin Shann.
Recognised as the pioneer of academic development of economics and traditional Australian economic history, Professor Shann was a strong advocate of individual intellectual freedom and developing a sense of social responsibilities. He wrote several books and essays on the economic history of Australia and was a major influence in formulating financial and fiscal policies in Australia.
