A man has been charged over at least 11 separate fires, including a significant fire at Breadalbane, following an in-depth police investigation.
Longford Police, with the assistance of the Tasmania Fire Service, have been investigating deliberately lit fires between Perth and Ulverstone, with the incidents occurring between August 2025 and April 2026.
As a result, a 29-year-old Nile man was charged earlier this year with arson and unlawfully setting fire to vegetation in relation to a fire at a public toilet block in Perth.
The same man will now be charged with an additional 8 fire-related crimes, following deliberately-lit fires at Sassafras, Whitemore, Longford, Perth and Breadalbane.
Inspector Craig Fox said the Breadalbane fires in April, 2026 had been significant.
"Thankfully, nobody was injured during these fires, however there is always a very high risk to the public when fires are deliberately lit due to the unpredictable nature of these incidents," he said.
"While our investigation is ongoing, and we are continuing to look at several fires within the region, the charges laid so far are the result of some great investigative work, and I'd like to thank the members of Longford Police who engaged in these matters along with the support of Tasmania Fire Service."
The man is next due to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on 24 September, 2026.
