Western Australia's health and medical researchers and innovators will share in $12.7 million in grants from the Cook Government's successful Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund.
Twenty-nine recipients from three grant programs and two new FHRI Co-Funding Partnerships were announced at today's FHRI Fund open day being held at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research at Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre.
The multi-million-dollar funding package will be shared by successful recipients and health experts across three grant programs, including the:
- WA Near Miss Awards: Emerging Leaders program
- Co-Funding Partnerships Program
- WA Cohort Studies Research Support program
New co-funding partnerships with the RPH Research Foundation and Cancer Council WA and the FHRI Fund will create even more opportunities for health and medical researchers, with the new co-funded Research Innovation and Impact Grant program opening today.
The FHRI Fund Open Day will celebrate International Women's Day with a focus on women's and children's health and an emphasis on partnerships with Aboriginal communities in the Pilbara.
The Open Day is hosted by the Department of Health in partnership with the WA Centre for Rural Health and the Pilbara Aboriginal Health Alliance (PAHA).
June Councillor, the Chief Executive Officer at Wirraka Maya Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (WMHSAC) and an investigator at the Pilbara Aboriginal Health Alliance, will deliver a keynote address with a focus on best practice and principles for research with Aboriginal communities in the Pilbara and also highlight a regional PAHA initiative focusing on data sovereignty 'Our Story, Our Way'.
Finalists from the State Government's 'The Challenge' initiative will deliver interactive demonstrations, providing unique insight into their efforts to improve health care delivery in the Pilbara.
The event will also feature presentations from FHRI Fund grant recipients with research and innovation projects based in the Pilbara.

The Government recently announced two new FHRI Fund programs, which will inject $110 million into the health and medical research sector over four years.
As stated by Acting Medical Research Minister David Templeman:
"Members of our regional and remote communities, such as those in the Pilbara, deserve the same access to world-class health care as those in metropolitan WA.
"Remote and regional health will continue to be a core focus and priority for the State Government.
"This open day will give some of our brightest minds in medical research and innovation the opportunity to network and develop new ideas that will benefit the entire community of Western Australia.
"New co-funding partnerships will bring even more grant opportunities for health and medical researchers".
