The project has now been referred to the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water for consideration under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
Construction of the new Inland Rail track connecting Narromine to Narrabri will only proceed once environmental approval is granted. The Narromine to Narrabri project comprises 306km of new track, and it is the longest section of the Inland Rail alignment.
The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project was placed on public exhibition in January 2021.
Following the EIS public exhibition, the NSW Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) publicly released the Narromine to Narrabri Preferred Infrastructure Report, Response to Submissions Report and an Amendment Report in August 2022 as part of the project's assessment phase.
The publication of these documents provided additional detail on the route selection process and potential hydrology and flooding impacts of the Narromine to Narrabri project, as well as written responses from ARTC Inland Rail to submissions received as part of the initial EIS Public Exhibition process.
