Families, swimmers, and local clubs in Perth's northern suburbs are set to benefit from a major upgrade at Arena Joondalup, with the venue's new 50-metre pool officially opening today.

The $13 million Cook Government investment delivers a state-of-the-art aquatic facility designed to meet growing demand across Perth's north, supporting everyone from learn-to-swim programs and families through to elite competition.

The new pool significantly enhances the venue's aquatic offering and reinforces Arena Joondalup's role as one of Western Australia's busiest and most important sport and recreation hubs.

Owned and operated by VenuesWest, Arena Joondalup welcomed more than 1.3 million visitors in 2024-25, second only to Optus Stadium across the VenuesWest portfolio.

Built to competition standard, the new 50-metre pool features 10 lanes, starting blocks at both ends, upgraded timing technology, and a deepened shallow end. A submersible dividing wall allows the pool to convert to short-course mode with up to 20 lanes, while also providing flexibility for water polo and other aquatic sports and programs.

Accessibility and safety were key priorities in the design, with new ramp and stair access into the pool, upgraded change rooms, and universal access toilets within the aquatic hall.

The facility also includes artificial intelligence-powered drowning detection technology, enhancing safety for swimmers in both the new lap pool and the refurbished family leisure pool.

To celebrate the opening, Arena Joondalup will host a free Family Fun Day on Monday, 2 March, coinciding with the Labour Day public holiday. The day will include water slide access, come-and-try fitness classes, and pickleball, with ice blocks for the first 1,000 guests.

Visitors will also be welcomed by a striking entry statement artwork created in collaboration between Arena Joondalup staff and Aboriginal students from St Catherine's College, adding a strong community element to the contemporary new aquatic space.
