  • New classrooms and other facilities opened at South Bunbury Primary School
  • Buildings part of $5.5 million school improvement project to be completed later this year

  • Key McGowan Government election commitment underway
  • Premier Mark McGowan and local Bunbury MLA Don Punch visited South Bunbury Primary School today to officially open new classrooms at the 107-year-old South-West school.

A key McGowan Government election commitment, the new classrooms are part of a school improvement project due to be fully completed later this year.

The $5.5 million project, jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments', includes a new early childhood building with classrooms for kindergarten and pre-primary students as well as new classrooms for Year 1 and 2 students.

A special place for parents to gather was incorporated into the outdoor landscaping design. Other facilities were added, including office spaces for the school psychologist, school chaplain, staff work rooms and storage areas. These works have been completed.

An existing kindergarten, known as the 'Apex' building, is being refurbished, with that element of the project due for completion later this month.

South Bunbury Primary School also received more than $200,000 as part of the McGowan Government's school maintenance blitz for structural repairs, helping support local jobs.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

"South Bunbury Primary School is 107 years old so it's important the facilities keep pace with what our local students need.

"As well as creating wonderful educational facilities for local students, this project has provided employment opportunities for South-West workers."

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

"South Bunbury Primary School first opened in 1913, with other buildings added in 1948.

"It is fantastic to see this school community now benefiting from the addition of modern, state-of-the-art classrooms and aesthetically pleasing grounds.

"This is just one of many school improvement projects which the McGowan Government is delivering around the State, to give WA children great spaces in which to learn and play."

As stated by Bunbury MLA Don Punch:

"Every time I visit South Bunbury Primary School I am impressed by the school community and the enthusiasm of the students and teachers alike, so I am confident the new facilities will be appreciated and put to the very best use.

"This has been an investment by the McGowan Government that has delivered immediate benefits in the form of jobs during the construction phase, and will continue to offer great benefits long into the future - providing an excellent learning environment to which students have the very best start to their formal education.

"Being able to deliver on projects like this is one of the great joys of being a local Member of Parliament."
