New edition of Science Week in Catalonia

The 24th Science Week in Catalonia (SC'19) will take place from the 8th to the 17th of November.

Like every year, the University of Barcelona takes part in the activities of the Science Week in Catalonia. This 24th edition will take place from the 8th to the 17th of November. In this occasion, the UB will be present from the very beginning, in the opening ceremony, held by the Catalan Parliament on Friday, 8th of November, at 10 a.m. The talk "Fronteres de la ciència: l'univers ocult i els exoplanetes", between Licia Verde, ICREA research lecturer at the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the University of Barcelona (ICCUB) and National Research Award 2018, and Ignasi Ribas, director of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC, ICE-CSIC), will take place. The activity will be chaired by the science journalist Lluís Reales.

The 24th Science Week in Catalonia (SC'19) is organized by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI), in collaboration with the UB, the support from the Department of Business and Knowledge (Secretary of Universities and Research) and cooperation from La Caixa, Amgen and Sabadell Bank Foundation.

Within the frame of the UB, as usual, on the 12th and 13th of November, the hall of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences (building B) will show the XXXV Exhibition on mushrooms. Like every year, this exhibition is organized by the Catalan Mycology Society, the Department Section of Botany of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences and the Pharmacy and Food Sciences CRAI Library, which also provides a bibliographic exhibition on mushrooms that can be visited from the 11th to the 5th of December.

The Faculty of Chemistry is organizing, on the 19th of November, the science itinerary La química y el vino, aimed at the general audience. This initiative includes a technical visit to the Enate wine cellar.

Among the activities that are aimed to high schools, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science is organizing the workshop Criptography: mathematics and secret data. Also, framed within the campaign Scientific Passport, there will be the talk "La recerca a la universitat", by the lecturers of the Faculty of Chemistry Estela Giménez and Fernadno Benavente. The aim of this activity is to stress the role of scientific and technological advances regarding the improvement of life quality, with examples to show the relation between research milestones and this improvement.

Last, the Institute of Complex Systems (UBICS) offers the workshop Complex networks for everyone, which allows students to make simulations of complex systems and will visit several neurophysics and material laboratories.
