New Training to Boost Local Design Review

  • New user guide and eLearning courses to support local government design review panels
  • Practical tools for clearer, more consistent design review to help deliver better places and stronger outcomes for Western Australian communities
  • Builds on the Local Government Design Review Manual released last year

The Cook Labor Government is making design review clearer, easier and more consistent, with the release of new local government design review training and guidance resources.

The initiative includes a suite of eLearning courses and a Local Government Design Review User Guide, that will equip Panel Members, Chairs and Local Government Officers with comprehensive tools to improve confidence, capability and daytoday efficiency.

Design review is a key part of the planning system, providing independent, expert advice early in the process, when proposals can still be refined to better respond to their local context.

These new resources are designed to accompany the Local Government Design Review Manual released in 2025, translating policy into practical tools for participants at every stage of the design review process.

Together, they provide accessible, 'how-to' guidance, enabling effective collaboration and informed decision-making.

Developed by the Government Architect of Western Australia in collaboration with the Western Australian Planning Commission, the resources respond directly to industry and local government feedback to address variations in design review processes throughout the State.

eLearning courses are delivered by the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA).

The design review resources and eLearning courses are available on the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage website .
