New Youth Anxiety, Depression Treatments in Works

University of Barcelona

The Nou Barris Mental Hygiene Centre Association has signed an agreement with the University of Barcelona to participate in a project that aims to develop new therapies for young people with anxiety and depression. Specifically, the project will evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention based on the analysis of personal identity, that is, on the reconstruction of the patient's "mental map" using virtual reality tools.

According to the agreement, patients from the association will be able to participate in a study in which some people will follow a cognitive behavioural therapy and others a new identity-based transdiagnostic therapy (IBTT). For those following the IBTT therapy, the virtual reality application EYME will be used as a support. This tool, developed by the UB's Faculty of Psychology's research group on Intervention in Clinical and Health Psychology, transforms concepts and people important to the patient's identity into images and words in a three-dimensional space. In this way, the person takes a "walk" through their mind that favours the therapeutic conversation.

This collaboration includes the participation of other organizations such as Badalona Serveis Assistencials.
