Visitors to the North Rockhampton Cemetery will now have easier access and a more welcoming, landscaped setting in which to remember loved ones, following the completion of upgrade works by Rockhampton Regional Council.

The historic site on Yaamba Road, first used for burials in 1879, has been upgraded with a new 210‑metre access road, 32 designated parking bays, and more than 200 native trees and shrubs planted across 22 new garden beds.

Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the works improve the visitor experience and protect the cemetery's heritage and capacity for future generations.

"We are proud to create a more appealing and user-friendly access for visitors, and the surrounding nature and greenery is a significant part of this experience," said Cr Rutherford.

"While Council removed old trees recently to safeguard existing burial sites, the new Jerilderie Red Bottle Trees and green island shrubs have been selected specifically for the cemetery environment to reduce root system impact."

"The new plantings will also improve the space with fresh colour and long-term shade, which will mature beautifully over time."

Site design for the project will also enable additional burial spaces in years to come, as well as easier pedestrian access and improved drainage.

The improvements to the site have required some traffic flow changes, so visitors are asked to follow new signage and directions for safe access.

The North Rockhampton Cemetery, 350-360 Yaamba Road, Norman Gardens, is open for visitors from sunrise to sunset.
