NSW sustainability champions announced

The Banksia Foundation

The search for NSW's best sustainable practices and innovations is now over, with the winners of the 2022 NSW Sustainability Awards announced.

The Banksia Foundation today announced winners in 11 categories at a gala in Sydney. Now in their second year, the NSW Sustainability Awards celebrate businesses, communities, individuals and governments who are leading the way in NSW's transition to a circular, net-zero and climate-resilient economy.

Banksia Foundation CEO Graz van Egmond describes the 2022 winners as exceptional.

"From creating a unique web tool that allows farmers to protect birdlife on their property to tackling antimicrobial resistance in livestock production with antibiotic-free feed supplements, the impressive crop of winners is a picture of ambition, creativity and innovation," Ms van Egmond says

The winners also include:

  • a water company that creates genuine conversation and behavioural change around the issue of flushable products through a creative campaign
  • an e-commerce platform that combats food waste by creating reusable, natural and compostable storage bags to keep fruit and vegetables fresh for longer
  • a clean technology company that transforms carbon dioxide into building materials and other valuable industrial products for the circular economy.

"Our judges were impressed by the calibre of this year's winners and especially, the young leaders who are inspiring local communities to take climate actions," Ms van Egmond says

There are some impressive young people among this year's young champions. They include Joshua Gilbert a Worimi man, cattle farmer and academic, who has been recognised for his passionate advocacy for Indigenous agriculture; and Anika Molesworth from Climate Wise Agriculture.

St Brigid's Primary School Waste Warriors were awarded the Minister's Young Climate Champion, presented by NSW Treasurer, The Hon. Matthew Kean. This recognised their commitment to waste reduction and ongoing efforts to get greater parental and teacher involvement.

The winners of the 11 categories are detailed on the next page.

Winners of the NSW Sustainability Awards will be automatically entered into the prestigious 34th National Banksia Sustainability Awards. The winners of these national awards will be announced in March 2023.

The 2022 NSW Sustainability Awards are proudly supported by the NSW Government.
