NT, WA Producers Gain from Major Cattle Industry Event

NT Government

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is backing Territory pastoralists with real, research-driven solutions to grow productivity, profitability, and jobs, delivering results for the north's cattle industry as part of its year of action, certainty and security.

Next week, a major cattle industry field day will be held at Bullo River Station, bringing together pastoralists, researchers, and industry leaders to share the latest innovations in northern cattle production.

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) has partnered with Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and Bullo River Station to deliver the event on Wednesday, 20 August 2025, as part of the MLA-funded EasyP project - a practical initiative helping producers increase adoption of phosphorous supplementation across northern Australia.

Bullo River Station is one of several producer demonstration sites across the Northern Territory, Queensland, and Western Australia, which is trialling new techniques to overcome phosphorus deficiency, a major barrier to productivity in northern herds.

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Gerard Maley said the event is another example of the CLP Government delivering on its commitment to rebuild the economy and strengthening the Territory's $1.3 billion agriculture sector.

"The EasyP project is an important initiative for Territory cattle producers, particularly those working in phosphorus-deficient regions where delivering supplement during the wet season can be a challenge," Mr Maley said.

"Events like this bring together pastoralists and our livestock research teams to share knowledge, tackle challenges, and explore opportunities that will strengthen the industry, improve profitability, and support sustainable growth."

NT Cattlemen's Association Chief Executive Officer Romy Carey welcomed the event, saying it builds on a strong foundation of research and practical insights for the pastoral industry.

"This long-running trial forms part of a broader suite of knowledge that northern producers now have access to, helping inform on-farm decision making," Ms Carey said.

"We thank NT DAF and Meat & Livestock Australia for their continued investment and support of research that strengthens the productivity and resilience of our industry."

Dr Tony Parker, who is the Program Manager, Grassfed Productivity at Meat & Livestock Australia, said MLA was proud to partner with government and industry to support northern producers.

"MLA is proud to support the EasyP project and collaborate with Bullo River Station and the NT Department of Agriculture and Fisheries to deliver practical, research-backed solutions for northern cattle producers," Dr Parker said.

"Phosphorus supplementation is a game-changer for productivity in deficient regions, and events like this field day help ensure producers have the tools and knowledge to make informed decisions on-farm."

Covering 400,000 acres, Bullo River Station is a working cattle property and luxury tourism destination located 800 kilometres south-west of Darwin and 200 kilometres east of Kununurra.

The field day program will include:

The latest phosphorus supplementation research;Bull testing and selection sessions;Pasture identification, assessment, and forage budgeting;A station tour; andUpdates on other DAF projects, including virtual fencing.

Mr Maley said supporting research like EasyP is central to the CLP Government's plan to grow the pastoral industry and expand market opportunities.

"The Northern Territory is home to more than two million head of cattle, and our producers are critical to the Territory's economy," he said.

"By backing research that delivers practical solutions, we're ensuring our pastoralists can continue producing world-class cattle, securing new markets, and driving economic growth right across the north."
