Ocean Reef Marina Earns Landmark Sustainability Nod

  • Ocean Reef Marina awarded EnviroDevelopment certification, successfully achieving the criteria for all six categories: ecosystems, waste, water, energy, materials, and community
  • The environmentally sustainable marina will offer more than 1,000 new homes, 12,000 square metres of retail and commercial space, and more than five hectares of community areas, including Perth's first metropolitan coastal pool and a family-friendly beach

DevelopmentWA's Ocean Reef Marina has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first marina development in Australia to receive EnviroDevelopment certification at the maximum level across all six available criteria.

This prestigious recognition, independently awarded by Australia's peak development industry body, Urban Development Institute of Australia, acknowledges excellence in sustainable design and construction across six key areas: ecosystems, waste, water, energy, materials, and community.

The certification underscores DevelopmentWA's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable urban development.

Ocean Reef Marina's design integrates innovative energy solutions, including a renewable energy microgrid which will be operated by Ocean Reef Renewable Energy (a Zenith Energy company), smart city technologies, and sustainable construction practices.

These features aim to reduce annual energy bills by up to 30 per cent for future residents and businesses.

The development also places a strong emphasis on native landscaping and biodiversity, fostering green spaces and tree canopies throughout the area.

More than 80 per cent of construction waste is also being diverted from landfill - with recycled materials repurposed for use in roads, car parks, drainage and other aspects of the project.

As stated by Planning and Lands and Housing and Works Minister John Carey:

"With Stage 1 of the project set to open in 2026, Ocean Reef Marina will become a world-class tourism precinct, featuring a diverse mix of residential options, lively local enterprises, and attractions designed to draw visitors throughout the year - all underpinned by leading environmental sustainability practices.

"This certification demonstrates our commitment to delivering innovative, environmentally responsible projects that enhance the quality of life for Western Australians."
