Madhavi Martin, a researcher at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been elevated to the grade of senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Senior members of the IEEE are those who have worked in a relevant field for at least 10 years and have made significant contributions to the profession.
Martin is a staff scientist in ORNL's Biosciences Division. Her research interests include laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), developing laser and imaging technologies for phenotyping plant species with a focus on biomass characterization and designing models to detect rare earth elements in natural materials and nuclear reactions. Martin's efforts have focused on dendrochemistry using LIBS to correlate tree growth and development to global climate change impacts on the environment.
She has been a member of the International Scientific Committee for the Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Society since being appointed in 2004. Martin was honored by the Knoxville YWCA's Tribute to Women in 2010 for her exemplary work in science and technology, as well as her fulfillment of the organization's mission.
