AMES, Iowa — Three months from the Iowa Caucuses and a year from the general elections, a political journalist is coming to Iowa State University next week to talk politics and civility.
"Civil Discourse in an Uncivil Age: Media and the 2020 Election" will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, in the Memorial Union Great Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
Alexander Heffner, host of "The Open Mind" on Public Broadcasting Service, will lead the discussion. Heffner has covered American politics, civic life and the millennial generation since the 2008 presidential campaign. His work has been profiled in the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Des Moines Register and numerous other outlets.
His writing has appeared in TIME, USA Today, Reuters, Wall Street Journal and more. Heffner co-authored "A Documentary History of the United States." He graduated from Phillips Academy and Harvard University.
This lecture will provide students with the opportunity to talk with Heffner about their importance in the Iowa Caucuses and the 2020 elections. Students will also be able to register to vote at the event. Students do not need to bring anything to register.
This event is co-sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, First Amendment series, political science department, League of Women Voters of Ames and Story County, Simpson College, Vote Everywhere, and the Committee on Lectures, which is funded by Student Government.
