Perth to host 2019 Australian Masters Rowing Championships

  • Supported by State Government through Tourism WA
  • Expected to attract more than 1,000 visitors to the State
  • Event forms part of Two-Year Action Plan to boost visitation

The Australian Masters Rowing Championships will be held at the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre in Perth next year.

Supported by Tourism Western Australia and managed by Rowing WA, the championships will run over four days from May 22 to 25, 2019.

The event began in 2002 and runs annually, offering about 330 races over the four days to masters rowers aged 27 years and above.

The event has 12 age divisions with representatives from New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory, as well as some international representatives.

Rowing WA has invited more than 20 international rowing federations to the event, with the focus to increase international participation.

The 2019 championships are expected to attract more than 1,000 out-of-State competitors and visitors, providing a boost to the local economy.

Mass participation events, such as the Australian Masters Rowing Championships, form part of Tourism WA's Two-Year Action Plan to grow the number of visitors to the State over the next two years.

As noted by Tourism Minister Paul Papalia:

"The Australian Masters Rowing Championships will boost the local economy, and assist in creating jobs for locals and attracting rowing enthusiasts from around Western Australia, interstate and overseas.

"Mass participation events such as this one help drive visitors to Perth and disperse to WA's regions while they're here.

"They help us attract interstate visitors to Perth and showcase the city's transformation into a more vibrant and affordable destination.

"This is a key goal of the Government's Two-Year Action Plan for tourism which aims to boost visitors to the State, encourage them to stay longer and disperse further regionally."
