From the depths of the darkroom to the furthest reaches of the cosmos, the Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh) will bring together leading artists, photographers and image-makers for PHOTOREAL 2026, a full-day symposium featuring free talks, demonstrations and affordable hands-on workshops on Sunday 20 September.

Exploring the ways light informs photographic practice, from inside the darkroom to the outer reaches of the cosmos, the program offers insights into the technical, creative and philosophical aspects of image-making.
From the darkroom to deep space
The day opens with a keynote presentation by astronomer Dr Peter Tuthill, whose groundbreaking work has helped capture some of the highest-resolution images ever taken of distant celestial objects. Audiences will gain insight into the technologies behind modern astronomical imaging, including work associated with NASA's James Webb Space Telescope and Australia's TOLIMAN space mission.
Renowned artist Bill Henson will share reflections from his distinguished career, discussing his approach to photography and the remarkable use of light that has defined his practice for decades.
Visitors can also attend a free demonstration with photographer Robert Ashton, who will unpack the fascinating wet-plate collodion process, offering a rare glimpse into one of photography's most technically demanding historical techniques.

Alongside the talks, participants can deepen their creative practice through a selection of affordable workshops led by contemporary artists:
- Grace Wood explores reflection, layering and image-making through a mirrored collage workshop
- Sarah Rhodes invites participants to experiment with light, shadow and analogue photographic techniques inspired by her acclaimed series The inner sky
- Ruth O'Leary guides participants in creating their own DIY photobooth set using collage, paper and costume elements.
