NSW Police are urging everyone to plan ahead and mark this Australia Day safely and responsibly with large crowds are expected to gather across the state.
Operation Australia Day 2023 is a high-visibility policing operation to ensure the safety and security of everybody– whether participating in events at Sydney's Circular Quay or getting together in other public spaces.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Paul Toole encouraged everyone to mark the public holiday in a safe and responsible way.
"No matter how you plan to spend the day, I encourage everyone to be sensible and respectful and look after each other," Mr Toole said.
"Police will be out in force across the State to crack down on anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related crime to make sure everyone marks the day safely.
"Double demerits will also be in place from Wednesday right through to Sunday, so if you're travelling during this time make sure you watch your speed and stay off your phone while driving."
Operation Commander, Assistant Commissioner Stephen Hegarty, said police are working closely with other government agencies to ensure the day is memorable for all.
"Police will be out in numbers – on the ground, in the air and on the water – as general duties officers are supported specialist units including the Police Transport Command, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Public Order and Riot Squad, Operations Support Group, Mounted Unit, Dog Unit and PolAir, " Assistant Commissioner Hegarty said.
"Community safety is always the number one priority for NSW Police, and with that in mind, anyone found to be ruining the day for others will be dealt with accordingly.
"Our message is clear: make this an Australia Day to remember, not one you'd rather forget. Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated, so be safe, look out for your mates, and know your limits," he said.
Marine Area Commander, Detective Superintendent Murray Reynolds, said Australia Day was typically one of the most popular days to be on the water, with Water Police patrolling.
"With significant maritime traffic expected on the harbour and in our waterways, skippers are reminded that the same drink-driving rules apply on the water as on the roads.
"As well as compliance checks, police will be conducting drug and alcohol testing, so make sure your vessel is in working order and all required safety equipment is on board.
"Drinking alcohol or taking drugs while in or out on the water can have a tragic ending, so make responsible decisions and look after your mates," Det Supt Reynolds said.
On the roads, double demerits will also be in place between Wednesday 25 January 2023 to Sunday 29 January 2023.
