Plan to bring University Reservoir back online

Council will use ground penetrating radar and commission expert engineers as part of a strategy to bring the University Reservoir at Smithfield back online.

The 20-megalitre reservoir, which helps to provide water and maintain adequate pressure to the northern beaches from Yorkeys Knob to Clifton Beach, was drained late last month due to a significant water leak that was undermining its footings and structural integrity.

Engineers will this week undertake a structural inspection of the slab and footings, while ground penetrating radar will be used to conduct an assessment of the ground directly below and around the perimeter of the reservoir.

Once the structural integrity of the reservoir is determined, a strategy can be formulated to address any identified issues.

Until a full assessment is complete, it is unclear how long the reservoir will remain offline.

However, Council has been running modelling to determine what changes can be made to the network to maintain adequate pressures and supply to the affected areas.
