Platform Maps Global ATMP Research, Sweden's Role

Karolinska ATMP Center is one of the partners behind a new platform that analyses global research on advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs). By tracking publications and their influence on areas such as clinical trials and patents, the platform provides insights into how the field is developing and how Sweden compares internationally.

Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) are medicines based on genes, cells or tissues. They include gene therapies, cell therapies and tissue-engineered products, and may offer new treatment options for diseases that are difficult or impossible to treat today. The new platform ATMP Map makes it possible to explore how ATMP research develops over time and how scientific discoveries influence clinical trials, patents and policy.

The analysis shows that Swedish ATMP research is extensively cited in clinical trials worldwide, highlighting its contribution to the global development of advanced therapies. Researchers in the Stockholm-Uppsala region have co-authored around 600 scientific publications, making it the strongest research partnership identified in the Swedish data.

The work began during preparations for NEXT-ATMP, a proposed national collaboration co-led by Karolinska Institutet and Lund University and involving partners from academia, healthcare and industry across Sweden.

"Sweden produces high-quality ATMP research, but research is only the first step. To benefit patients and society, we also need strong environments for development, clinical trials and implementation. The platform helps us identify where those opportunities exist and where further efforts are needed," says Knut Steffensen , Director of the Karolinska ATMP Center .

Tracing research beyond publications

The platform provides a global overview of the ATMP field. It highlights scientific strengths and research collaborations across countries and institutions, while helping place Swedish research in an international context.

"We can see not only who produces the most ATMP research, but where that knowledge goes next: into trials, patents and policy. That helps us understand where Sweden is strong and where the path from discovery to treatment needs support," says Yotam Sofer , House of Innovation at Stockholm School of Economics who developed the platform.

Yotam Sofer will present ATMP Mapt and demonstrate how the platform can be used in a webinar on 12 November 2026.

Collaborating partners behind the new platform are: Lund University, Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the Stockholm School of Economics, Uppsala University, Göteborg University, Karolinska University Hospital, Skåne University Hospital, ATMP Sweden together with the industrial partners CCRM Nordics, Biolamina and other innovation actors and companies.
