Police charge man after discovery of drugs in barber chairs

A man has been arrested in Templestowe Lower after authorities seized a quantity of methylamphetamine, imported into Australia.

Detectives from Joint Taskforce Icarus executed a search warrant at a property in Balmoral Avenue on 31 October and arrested a 39-year-old male resident.

The investigation was launched on 5 September 2022 after Australian Border Force detected an air cargo consignment containing approximately 10 kg of methylamphetamine, impregnated in the seats of barber chairs.

A previous importation of approximately 10kg of methamphetamine was also identified from March 2022.

The man has been charged with importing a commercial quantity of border-controlled drug pursuant to section 307.1 of Criminal Code Act 1995 and has been remanded to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 23 January 2023.

The potential maximum penalty is life imprisonment.
