Initial information suggests a 21-year-old man was walking along Surf Parade this morning when he became involved in a verbal exchange with a group of men and women around 2.40am.

The group allegedly continued to follow the man before an altercation occurred and the 21-year-old was punched, causing him to fall and hit his head.

He was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police established a crime scene at the corner of Margaret Avenue and Surf Parade and a number of people are currently assisting with inquiries.
