Police lay charges over historical sexual assault of teenage girl

Unsolved Homicide detectives have charged a man over the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl in Sydney's west, uncovered as part of ongoing inquiries into the 1999 murder of Michelle Bright.

Michelle Bright, then aged 17, was last seen alive on Saturday 27 February 1999, when a friend dropped her off at Herbert Street, Gulgong, after a birthday party.

Three days later, her body was located in long grass by the side of Barneys Reef Road.

Earlier this year, detectives from the Unsolved Homicide Unit under Strike Force Mitcham II, arrested a 53-year-old man near Mudgee.

He was charged over the murder of Michelle Bright and remains before the courts.

As part of ongoing inquiries, strike force investigators received reports a 17-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted by a man known to her at Regents Park in 2007.

Following further investigations, detectives charged a 53-year-old man with assault with act of indecency, attempt choke/strangle with intent to commit indictable offence and aggravated sex assault (inflict actual bodily harm on victim) on Wednesday 2 December 2020.

The man was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Mudgee Local Court today (Wednesday 23 December 2020).

Investigations by Unsolved Homicide detectives are continuing.
