Police lay charges - Unlawful use of motor vehicle in Darwin

Northern Territory Police have charged 3 male youths, one aged 13 and two aged 17, in relation to two separate incidents that occurred over the weekend.

During the night of 11 February 2023, the 13-year-old and a 17-year-old, allegedly unlawfully entered a residence at Nightcliff and stole numerous personal items and two vehicles belonging to the occupants.

The following day, Strike Force Trident members located and arrested the offenders after tracking the vehicles to the northern suburbs.

The 17-year-old was charged with:

  • Aggravated robbery
  • Unlawful entry
  • Aggravated unlawful use of motor vehicle
  • Learner driver - no person in front seat
  • Unlawfully possess property
  • Damage to property x 2
  • Obtain benefit by deception x 3
  • Stealing x 4

He was remanded in custody to appear in court today.

The 13-year-old was charged with:

  • Aggravated unlawful use of motor vehicle
  • Unlawfully possess property

He was remanded in custody to appear in court today.

Police have also charged another 17-year-old in relation to a separate incident.

The youth came into possession of a Landcruiser that was stolen overnight on 12 February from an unlawful entry at Larrakeyah.

Throughout the day, reports were made to police about the vehicle being driven dangerously in the northern suburbs.

Strike Force Trident members identified the youth in the car however, a decision was made not to pursue the vehicle during peak hour traffic. Police CCTV Operators continued to monitor and track the vehicle until it was safe to make an arrest.

Police successfully deployed a tyre deflation device on the vehicle in Palmerston, resulting in a foot pursuit and the arrest of the youth.

He was taken to the Palmerston Watch House and later charged with:

  • Aggravated unlawful use of motor vehicle
  • Drive vehicle in a manner dangerous
  • Learner driver - no person in front seat
  • Drive without L plates displayed
  • Drive medium range blood alcohol content
  • Serious breach of bail
  • Breach order of suspended sentence

He was remanded in custody to appear in court today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said "It was a fantastic effort from the Strike Force Trident Detectives to safely identify, locate and apprehend these offenders in such a timely manner.
