Police officer assaulted - Orana Mid-Western

A man will appear in court today charged after allegedly assaulting a police officer in the state's Orana region.

About 4pm yesterday (Thursday 24 December 2020), an officer attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District attended a home on Merilba Street, Narromine, after reports of a domestic-related incident.

Upon arrival, the male senior constable exited his vehicle and was allegedly repeatedly punched in the head by a man, falling to the ground where the assault continued, knocking the officer unconscious.

A woman, known to the man, intervened and the officer regained consciousness. The man took the officers radio and smashed the police vehicle's windscreen before throwing it across the road.

The officer was able to call for assistance inside his vehicle, before a member of the public rendered aid until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

Further police attended to assist, and a 27-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Narromine Police Station.

The officer was taken to Narromine Hospital before being conveyed to Dubbo Hospital for further treatment, before being released.

The Narromine man was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (DV), resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, affray, destroy or damage property, driver vehicle under influence of alcohol and resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty.

He was refused bail to appear before Dubbo Bail Court today (Friday 25 December 2020).
