Officers from Casey Highway Patrol are appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage following a multi-vehicle collision in Berwick this morning.
Police attended the Princes Freeway scene following multiple calls to Triple Zero (000) about an erratic driver who was allegedly speeding and weaving across lanes about 11am.
It is understood the 2025 white Peugeot merged into the inbound emergency lane before it crashed into a barrier.
The Peugeot then struck a nearby Ford Focus, as well as a Mazda CX9.
A 72-year-old woman, who was the passenger in the Ford Focus, was transported to hospital where she remains with critical injuries.
The 83-year-old driver of the Ford, as well as the occupants of the Mazda, were luckily uninjured.
Police will allege the driver of the Peugeot, a 34-year-old man, was seen driving erratically in the lead up to the incident.
It is understood the man was seen trying to collect his belongings from the damaged car before passersby stopped him as he attempted to leave the scene.
Officers interviewed the Pascoe Vale man, who has since been released pending further enquiries as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigators are especially keen to speak with anyone with dash cam vision of the Peugeot prior to the collision, as well as anyone with vision of the incident itself.
