Detours will soon be in place for motorists along Ingham Road to allow Townsville City Council to carry out essential stormwater infrastructure upgrades.
Ingham Road will be closed between Pilkington and Duckworth streets from Tuesday 26 April 2022 to allow Council to complete the necessary upgrades.
Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Kurt Rehbein said the stormwater infrastructure helped redirect surface water to minimise the risk of damage from flooding.
"It is vital Council can carry out the work to ensure the infrastructure remains fit for purpose ahead of any future significant weather events," Cr Rehbein said.
"Part of the infrastructure is under Ingham Road, and Council crews are required to excavate some of the road to replace it.
"Closing the whole section of Ingham Road between Pilkington and Duckworth streets is the safest option for motorists and will allow Council to carry out the work as quickly as possible.
"Detours will be in place, and Council will maintain local access for affected businesses to ensure they can continue trading with minimal interruptions."
Mayor Jenny Hill said she understood the inconvenience the road closure could cause for some motorists.
"Ingham Road is a heavily used road, particularly for residents who live in the northern suburbs and work in Garbutt or the city," Cr Hill said.
"However, this work needs to be carried out, as the stormwater infrastructure has reached the end of its operational life and needs replacing.
"Motorists will be detoured along Duckworth and Pilkington streets and onto Woolcock Street while the work is being carried out."
The $355,000 project is expected to take two months to complete and involves removing and reinstating some sections of the road to upgrade the stormwater infrastructure.
